With more than 200 fans, friends, and families cheering them on, the Pennsbury Boys Ultimate team came back from an 11-8 second half deficit to beat Lower Merion in the Born to Dive championship game 12-11. After the impressive win in the wind, Pennsbury is now ranked 8th among all United States high school teams. Lower Merion is 9th.

The entire team contributed with tenacious defense and disciplined cutting and throwing. While everyone made remarkable throws and catches in the breeze, Kyle Ford impressed again with his gravity-defying leaps and dives. He and the other captains - Jimmy Bray, Jack Gallen, and Jacob Neil - displayed talent, passion and maturity that motivated their team and reflected favorably on the entire program. Credit to the coaching staff and also to Risha and Michael Neil, who organized the tournament.

PHS Falcons Finish Nationals Ranked 14th in the USA!

After a stellar year earned the Pennsbury High School Boys’ Ultimate Team a ranking of 14th in the USA, the Falcons were invited to the National High School Invitational Tournament to compete with 15 other elite teams for the National Championship. The team had set its goal for the season to return to this tournament and to compete for the top finish. Two weeks earlier, they had finished 2nd at States behind the powerful Wissahickon team, after losing Captain Kyle Ford to a serious knee injury after an unfortunate collision during the championship game. At that point, the teams were playing evenly, 2 -2. Two weeks later, the team and its loyal and loud fan base travelled to Rockland Illinois for the biggest tournament of the year.

Ultiworld’s brief preview said this: “Pennsbury (PA) will be in attendance but notably without their all-star player, Kyle Ford, who injured his knee in their state championship game against Wissahickon. We will have to wait and see who will step up in place of Ford to lead Pennsbury this weekend, but they have been one of the top East Coast teams all season.” Skipping ahead, the answer to their question is the entire team stepped up.

The first day was a round robin format for pool play. The Falcon’s pool included eventual Champion Green Valley (Utah), and top-8 finishers Lincoln (Washington) and St. Louis Park (Minnesota). It was a tough day for the team, and could have been much better if Kyle had been able to play. But great leadership and the team’s deep brotherhood powered them through with their spirits intact.

Ultiworld wrote this: “Pennsbury (PA) admittedly did not have a great day… Although Pennsbury did not win any games, they still kept their spirits high and were able to enjoy the moment and that they had the opportunity to play at such a prestigious tournament. Hopefully they can continue to have fun tomorrow.”

On Saturday, the team battled for positions 13 through 16. These are still among the very best high school teams in America. After losing a tough first game to last year’s champion Lone Peak (Utah), the players remained bouyant and won the following 2 games. They went out on a high note after an exciting universe point win over Berkely (California) on Jack Gallen’s perfect sky-hook forehand to Zach Vadakot in the far corner.

With nothing else to do from my hospital bed that weekend, I watched many of the HSNI games and teams. The level of talent was well beyond what I expected, especially among the very best. Even so, few exhibited the remarkable level of leadership from within that Pennsbury achieved. While the coaches were an important component, and the fan base was enthusiastic throughout, I give a great deal of credit to the Captains and the boys themselves. It was an admirable display of maturity, good-spiritedness and commitment to each other.

Congratulations to everyone involved.
